Our inaugural LUMBERYARD in the City season is underway at The Kitchen in New York City with performances through July 2.
Along with sold out houses and solid reviews of the three new works presented to date — mention of LUMBERYARD is finding its way into the press.
‘Catskill, N.Y.’s moment’
Village Voice, New York’s longtime arts and entertainment weekly, recently spoke to artist Jane Comfort about of the upstate town where we’ve begun building our new residency facility.
“Catskill’s moment is about to come — it feels like Soho did in the early 70s,” she said.
Jane, who is part of Lumberyard’s Artistic Advisory Board, went on to share with Village Voice the story of how our Catskill, N.Y. initiative began:
“[Executive Director] Adrienne started asking artists, ‘What do you need?’
“We needed residencies. Time in the theater with a tech crew.
“[Lumberyard is] giving commissioning funds. They rented The Kitchen. I’ve got fairy godparents!
“We’re all so used to slogging it out for ourselves; having this level of support is just great.”
Collaborating with The Kitchen
Presenting at The Kitchen this summer has allowed LUMBERYARD to support the creation of five new contemporary dance works.
We’ve provided up to two weeks of substantial development support through our Incubator program — all part of the gradual transition from our final performance season in Rockville to Lumberyard in Catskill.
We’re looking forward to hosting a diverse crowd of Catskill, N.Y. residents and Hudson Valley visitors at our opening season in 2018.
In the meantime, enjoy artists’ works that we’ve been supporting, including upcoming shows at The Kitchen, details are here.
