About LUMBERYARD

LUMBERYARD helps performing artists make the work they’ve imagined.

Within six years, we’ve become a leading force in U.S. contemporary performance, launching bold programs that ensure its continued vitality.

We’re in the midst of building a state-of-the-art facility where artists will be able to fine-tune their works before they premiere.

Once open, our new space will replicate the country’s most prominent stages, making it the pre-eminent venue for out-of-town premieres.

While construction continues, LUMBERYARD’s opening season audiences will have the first glimpse of the calibre of performance we’ll be presenting in the years ahead.

Why Catskill, N.Y.?

Moving to Catskill, N.Y. was a decision made easier by the warm reception from residents that LUMBERYARD immediately received.

The Water Street property we purchased was both idyllic and historic. It was once a lumberyard as central to Catskill’s economy as our organization will be to its future.

Working closely with local residents, we’re committed to helping restore and revitalize Catskill and the greater Hudson Valley.

So you can see the exciting changes already taking place, we didn’t want to wait for construction on our campus to be complete before bringing celebrated artists to Catskill.

Festival details

From June 28 – September 1, we proudly present The Under Construction Summer Festival both on-site at LUMBERYARD, as well as in partnership with neighboring venues.

It is our great pleasure to share with you examples of the great work we’re accomplish together.

  • Join us, June 28 – July, 1 at Helsinki Hudson for Urban Bush Women’s SCAT!, a dance-driven musical that tells a love story of two people making their way during the Great Migration.
  • At LUMBERYARD, July 6-8, STREB Extreme Action Company will perform SEA, a wild kaleidoscope of action and music, with human bodies careening through, around, and above invented hardware. A local guest DJ, STREB’s resident DJ and an emcee will also be a part of the show.
  • Also at LUMBERYARD, July 13-14, join us for a party and a performance under the stars. Guests will be treated to two-hours or light bites from Ca’Mea Restaurant and beverages from local Hudson breweries. Bridgman | Packer Dance’s TRUCK will be performed twice each evening, taking place inside a 17-foot U-Haul truck. It ranges from evocative to humorous to sensuous and integrates live performance and video technology.
  • At Bridge Street Theatre, July 27-29: a yet-to-be named, evening-length transmedia dance theater experience from d. Sabela grimes. The Los Angeles Times describes him as “the Los Angeles dance world’s best-kept secret” and “one of a mere handful of artists who make up the vanguard of hip-hop fusion.”
  • At Hudson Hall, Aug. 3-5, Jodi Melnick’s solo One of Sixty-Five Thousand Gestures, a deep exploration of movement, slipping from casual to formal and back again, and using costume as a sculptural moving object in the dance. The work will be followed by NEW BODIES, Melnick’s celebrated collaboration with New York City Ballet dancers Sara Mearns, Jared Angle and Gretchen Smith which weaves dance, spoken text and live music.
  • At Hudson Hall, Aug.17-19, you can see John Jasperse’s Freedom (working-title), which includes varied group of dancers and a commissioned score by Hahn Rowe.
  • Also at Hudson Hall, Aug. 24-26: Variations on Themes from Lost and Found: Scenes from a Life and other works by John Bernd. This performance is a collage of choreography and music John Bernd (1953-1988) created during the last seven years of his life.
  • Our season’s final performance will be at LUMBERYARD, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Tony Award winning Savion Glover, an artist called “the greatest virtuoso of our time, perhaps of all time”, joins forces with Marcus Gilmore, an heir to jazz royalty as grandson to iconic drummer Roy Haynes.
